One of the oldest settlements in the country and the second largest city today, Krakow is located on the two banks of river Vistula, in the region Little Poland just at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. Founded back in the 7th century, the city of Krakow has always been an important cultural and academic center, but also a major spot for business, trade, art and tourism. It has interesting architecture, plenty of landmarks and friendly atmosphere.
Once capital of Poland, today Krakow is the country’s most visited destination and many of its sites including the Old Town are included in the World Heritage List. Besides the Old Town, which hosts many of the tourist attractions, there are other places to be visited and these include the district of Kazimierez with the Renuh Synagogue and the Nowa Huta district. A visit to the nearby Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp is also possible, though depressing and shocking.
There are plenty things to do during a trip to the old royal capital Krakow, like going for a walk from the Florian’s Gate to the Wawel castle, passing through the Main Market Square Rynek Glowny, relax at the Planty Park surrounding the Old Town, check the open-air flea markets, etc.
Dining out in Krakow is quite pleasant, since the local cuisine is very delicious, like for example the traditional and very famous pierogi filled with potatoes and cheese, meet, mushrooms, or fruits. The pubs, cafes and bars in Krakow are so many that once you go out of a pub you literally bump into another.

  • Main Market Square

The city of Krakow is famous for its fantastic main market square named Rynek Glowny, which spreads over forty thousand square meters, making it the biggest Medieval town square in Europe. Placed in the Old Town of Krakow, the market square is set in the very center of the city and was founded back in the 13th century. The market square is surrounded by numerous historical sites, churches and palaces. Its center is occupied by the Cloth Hall, which neighbors the Town Hall Tower and the 10th century Church of St. Wojciech. Here is also placed the 14th century St. Mary Basilica with its Gothic towers. Rynek Glowny is situated on the Royal Road itself, between the Wawel Castle and the Barbican of Krakow. Crowded with people throughout the year, the Main Market Square is a favorite meeting place and a venue for many public festivities and events including the Lajkonik festivities, the Krakow szopka Festival, the Juwenalia Student Festival, the Festival of Military Bands, and of course the biggest party for New Year’s Eve in Poland. In year 2005, Rynek Glowny was selected as the Best Square in the World.

  • Oskar Schindler’s Factory

The Oskar Schindler’s Factory is tightly connected with the history of Krakow and the destiny of many Jews. Everything started when the district Podgorze in Krakow was turned into a Jewish Ghetto for the thousands of Jews living in the city. At that time many Germans established businesses here to make profit from the German invasion of Poland. Among these Germans was Oskar Schindler, who established a factory in Podgorze and initially was motivated by money. Later though he saved at his expense and at great risk the lives of more than thousand Jews who worked for him. The Jews working for Schindler were not tortured and prevented deportation, since they were employed. Moreover, on several occasions, he saved their lives by bribing the SS officers and using all his skills, charm and money to protect them. Later, he also started to smuggle Jewish children out of the ghetto, placing them in the hands of Polish nuns.

Today the Oskar Schindler’s Factory features a large exhibition, which presents life in Krakow during the Nazi invasion and the tragedy of the Second World War. Here should be visited the Plaszow Camp memorial, many photographs and original documents. The factory is set a short walk away from Kazimierz district where the main hotels are, across Vistula river.

The construction of the cathedral started in year 1320 and it was completed in year 1364. Today its structure remains almost unchanged. • Jewish District Kazimierz

An area of Krakow that should not be missed and which is tightly connected to the history of the city is the Jewish District also known as Kazimierz. The area became a main cultural center for the Polish Jews, after a large Jewish population moved here at the end of the fifteen century and was living here undisturbed and in peace until the Second World War. The Jews that lived in Kazimierz had played a vital role in the economy of the Krakow region. During the dark years of the Second World War, the Jews in Krakow and the district of Kazimierz included were forced to go to the Podgorze ghetto where Nazis killed many of them in death camps. For many years after the war the Kazimierz district was deserted until year 1988, when the Jewish Cultural Festival was organized there. The district became even more popular after the movie that Steven Spielberg made in 1993, Schindler’s List, which further drew the attention to Kazimierz district. Today tourists find here many souvenir shops, bookstores and Jewish restaurants. The sites that have to be seen in Kazimierz include the Old Synagogue which is home to the Jewish History Museum, the Remuh Synagogue, the High and the Izaak Synagogues, the Kupah and the Tempel Synagogues, as well as the Old Jewish Cemetery.
